Jonathan Vargas of Gaston bought his first lottery ticket Saturday. By that evening, he was the first South Carolinian to win the state's Powerball jackpot.
“I have a mixture of feelings. Scary. Exciting. Still shocking. I’m still telling my mother to pinch me,” the 19-year-old Vargas told The State newspaper.
The winning numbers in the May 17 drawing were 12, 14, 15, 21, and 43. The Powerball was 30, and the PowerPlay multiplier was 3.
Vargas said at a Monday news conference that he used the ages of his four siblings and his mother to pick the winning numbers. (Wonder how his mother feels about everyone knowing her age ...) But the Powerball number, 30, was a lucky guess, he said.
Vargas won $35.3 million, but according to The State, he's choosing to take a lump sum of $17.3 million. Lottery officials said he should have his money within two weeks.
