Nearly 740 miles of beaches along the eastern seaboard, including Folly Beach and Kiawah Island, have been proposed to be considered as "critical habitat areas" for the threatened loggerhead sea turtle.
The proposal, submitted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is currently open for public comment and requests for public hearings until late May.
What this designation could mean for building regulations along the shoreline is still undetermined.
